The pecan nut, generally called “pecan” is native to North America and is the fruit of the pecan tree. It is a member of the family of tree nuts and is one of the richest in unsaturated fatty acids. Its consumption helps to reduce levels of bad cholesterol, strengthens the immune system and prevents cardiovascular disease. It also provides a lot of energy. The pecan, when compared to the other nuts and to the seeds of oleaginous plants, is the one that contains the most antioxidants. The pecan is an excellent source of manganese, copper and zinc.
The pecan is used in pastries, most often found in brownies and pies. It is also delicious when toasted and included in a salad.
