Flax seeds are a significant source of omega-3. They help to reduce cholesterol, protect nerve cells and prevent cardiovascular issues. These tiny seeds also contain antioxidants. One tablespoon (15 ml) of ground flax seed per day will also help to treat and prevent constipation. Flax seeds are a natural laxative and can relieve stomach cramps and intestinal conditions. They contain lignin and phytoestrogens that minimize the increase in estrogen levels in post-menopausal women; which in turn will lower the risk of breast cancer.
Ground flax seeds are excellent and are consumed in various ways. They can be added to yogurt, fruit smoothies, soup, muffins, etc. Make sure to refrigerate any leftovers as flax seeds oxidize quickly once they have been ground.
