The hazelnut, also called “filbert”, is the fruit of the common hazel. Turkey is the largest producer of hazelnuts. This nut is a member of the oleaginous family. It is rich in omega-9, vitamin E, fibre, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin B. Regular hazelnut consumption can reduce cholesterol levels, prevent certain cancers, lower stress and intellectual fatigue.
In the kitchen, we usually use the seed or the fruit that is found inside the shell. The shell is opened using a nutcracker. It is used grated, powdered, crushed or whole. It is very popular in desserts.
